Online
Documents
Ever since the discovery or rather
invention of the humble scanner, online documents have become a part
and parcel of our everyday lives. Just think about it. When was the
last time you used a physical document? Most of your school and college
records are in all probability online documents. Or digital documents
at the very least. After the advent of online diagnosis, most of your
medical records are also online documents. In fact, your very identity
is resident on various servers in the form of online documents of one
sort or the other.
Online documents offer various degrees of convenience to all
stakeholders. They are a direct result of the paperless revolution that
began with the advent of the internet and continue to dominate our
lives even to this day. And the future too holds a great deal in store
for online documents. For one thing, they have proven themselves to be
convenient. You no longer need to lug around reams of perishable
offline documents in order to maintain a record of your life. A simple
thumb drive can easily store all your certificates, resumes, records
and even transcripts in the form of online documents. For another, they
have greatly reduced our reliance on paper. The less paper we use, the
greater the chance of survival for our sorely diminishing rain forests.
Nature is a very threatened commodity in our world and each step we can
take in the way of helping preserve it, is welcome. Thirdly, online
documents offer a great deal of convenience in terms of
reproductability. The costs involved are nil and the efficiency in
spreading online documents or electronic, digital documents is great!
And finally, online documents are a great way to store and instantly
retrieve records when they are needed. Being digital in nature, they
can be stored and searched for in a way that offline documents never
can. This makes them reliable, indestructible (unless the online
repository crashes!) and instantly findable. No more searching through
piles and reams of paper documents.
Even websites are nothing but online documents of a kind. Think about
it. They are in effect documents that are resident online. And like all
offline documents they contain information that you can use in one way
or another. Imagine what the world would be like if we didn’t
have access to resources like Wikipedia and all the information that
was contained on the website had to be stored as offline, paper
documentation. We would surely wipe out any trace of plant life on
earth in a bid to create that much paper to store vast amounts of
information on!
